Samuel Sai-Kwong Bau, MBBS, FRCPC, died on April 19, 2024, in Delta, B.C., at age 88. Dr. Bau was certified by the Royal College in Pediatrics in 1972. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Sydney in Australia in 1965. As a clinical research fellow at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Dr. Bau co-presented a medical paper with Dr. Henry Levison that significantly improved the lives of children with cystic fibrosis. He opened his own practice in Tsawwassen, B.C. where he was known for his dedication to children and their families. Read more about Dr. Bau.
Véronique Susset, MD, FRCPC, died on Oct. 5, 2023, in Magog, Que., at age 97. Dr. Susset was certified by the Royal College in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in 1957. She obtained her medical degree from the University of Paris in 1953. Dr. Susset held several leadership, clinical and teaching positions throughout her career, including president of the Association of Physiatrists of Quebec. She established the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke (Fleurimont) which she directed for several years. Dr. Susset worked at the Lucie-Bruneau Rehabilitation Center until her retirement at age 85. Read more about Dr. Susset.
David Michael Magder, MD/CM, FRCPC, died on Aug. 24, 2023, in Toronto, Ont., at age 83. Dr. Magder was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry in 1971. He obtained his medical degree from McGill University in 1965. Following his training, Dr. Magder worked for several years at the Geha Hospital in Israel before returning to Canada. For 40 years, he held the position of part-time assistant professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. A dedicated psychiatrist, Dr. Magder treated patients at his private practice. Read more about Dr. Magder.
Ethel Eliza Pereira, MBBS, FRCSC, died on Sept. 3, 2023, in Halifax, N.S., at age 96. Dr. Pereira was certified by the Royal College in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1963. She obtained her medical degree from the Dr. M.G.R. Medical University in Chennai, India, in 1953. Dr. Pereira built her medical practice in Halifax where she was known for her dedication to helping women and delivering babies. She worked at several hospitals throughout her medical career, including the Halifax Infirmary, Victoria General Hospital, Grace Maternity Hospital, IWK Health Centre and Stadacona Medical Center. Dr. Pereira was also an associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Dalhousie University. Read more about Dr. Pereira.
Abdulkarim Mohamedali Jiwa, MBChB, FRCPC, died on July 4, 2024, in Vancouver, B.C., at age 79. Dr. Jiwa was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry in 1976. He obtained his medical degree from Makerere University Medical School in Kampala, Uganda, in 1971. Dr. Jiwa was inspired in his career pursuits by Scottish professor of Psychiatry, Dr. Allen German. A highly respected psychiatrist, he practised for close to 50 years at the University of British Columbia Hospital. Read more about Dr. Jiwa.
Diane Katherine Whitney, MD, FRCPC, died on May 22, 2024, in Kingston, Ont., at age 61. Dr. Whitney was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry in 1996. She obtained her medical degree from the University of Western Ontario in 1988. Dr. Whitney operated a private practice in Thunder Bay, Ont., for 14 years where she served close to 4,000 clients from across northern Ontario. A clinical expert in mood disorders, women’s wellness and trauma/PTSD, she was also an advocate for Indigenous health, proactively recruiting Indigenous Psychiatry residents to the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.
