Jennifer Sibilla Maria Oates, MD, FRCPC, died on August 8, 2023, in Sooke, B.C., at age 50. She was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry (2009) and Geriatric Psychiatry (2013). For 14 years, Dr. Oates practised with Island Health on Vancouver Island specializing in Geriatric Psychiatry. She is remembered for her skill, dedication and compassion. Read more about Dr. Oates.

Joyce G. Clearihue, MD/CM, FRCPC, died on July 11, 2023, in Victoria, B.C., at age 96. She was certified by the Royal College in Dermatology in 1958. Dr. Clearihue obtained her medical degree from McGill University in 1953. She became a physician when few women entered the profession and was often the only one of her colleagues able to confirm difficult diagnoses. Nancy Margaret Davis Mayer, MD, FRCPC, died on July 10, 2023, in Ottawa, Ont., at age 78. She was certified by the Royal College in Dermatology in 1975. Dr. Mayer obtained her medical degree from the University of Ottawa in 1969. She is remembered as perceptive, wonderful, intelligent and a great teacher to her patients. Read more about Dr. Mayer.

Leslie Stephen Landecker, MBChB, FRCSC, died on July 7, 2023, in Toronto, Ont., at age 77. He was certified by the Royal College in Ophthalmology in 1979. Dr. Landecker obtained his medical degree from the University of Cape Town in 1971. Patients described him as a wonderful human being as well as a very caring doctor, admired for his kind and gentle ways. Read more about Dr. Landecker.

Mamoru Watanabe, MD/CM, FRCPC, died on July 5, 2023, in Calgary, Alta., at age 90. He was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 1963. Dr. Watanabe obtained his medical degree from McGill University in 1957. He served as dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary from 1982-1992. During his administrative years, he remained active in clinical practice, medical research and medical education. Read more about Dr. Watanabe.

Thomas George McAvinue, MBChB, FRCPC, died on June 23, 2023, in Moncton, N.B., at age 67. Dr. McAvinue was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 1989. He received his medical degree from the University of Glasgow in 1979. Dr. McAvinue worked as a cardiologist at The Moncton Hospital, a career he was very passionate about. Read more about Dr. McAvinue.

John William Kerr, MD/CM, FRCSC, died on June 23 in Kingston, Ont., at the age of 95. He was certified by the Royal College in General Surgery in 1958. Dr. Kerr obtained his medical degree from Queen’s University in 1953. He served as deputy chief of surgery at Kingston General Hospital and also as associate dean of Undergraduate Affairs at Queen’s University where he provided counsel to young medical students. Read more about Dr. Kerr.

James Wilfred Hough, MD, FRCPC, died on June 19, 2023, in Gloucester, Ont., at age 96. He was certified by the Royal College in Diagnostic Radiology in 1973. Dr. Hough graduated Summa cum Laude from the University of Ottawa Medical School in 1968 with a gold medal in Pediatrics. After specializing in Radiology, he entered private practice and practised for 25 years until his retirement. Read more about Dr. Hough.

Roger A. Perrault, MD, FRCPC, died on June 16, 2023, in Ottawa, Ont., at age 87. He was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 1981. Dr. Perrault obtained his medical degree from the University of Ottawa in 1963. His empathy and listening skills were commended by those who knew him. Read more about Dr. Perrault.

Andrew Jenkins Moore, MD, FRCPC, died on June 14, 2023, in Whistler, B.C., at age 81. He was certified by the Royal College in Urology in 1973. Dr. Moore obtained his medical degree from the University of Western Ontario in 1966. He established a large and flourishing practice at St. Paul’s Hospital and enjoyed teaching interns and residents as an associate clinical professor in the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Medicine. Read more about Dr. Moore.

Peter Read Knight, MBChB, FRCSC, died on June 8, 2023, in Hamilton, Ont., at age 95. He was certified by the Royal College in General Surgery in 1984. Dr. Knight obtained his medical degree from the University of Birmingham in 1953. Widely recognized for his many professional accomplishments, Dr. Knight received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award and the Canada Volunteer Award. Read more about Dr. Knight.

Pierre Gaulin, MD, FRCPC, died on June 7, 2023, in Ottawa, Ont., at age 97. He was certified by the Royal College in Urology in 1957. Dr. Gaulin obtained his medical degree from the University of Ottawa in 1951. He practised at The Ottawa Hospital and Montfort Hospital and taught Urology as an associate professor of surgery at the University of Ottawa. Later in his career, he joined the medical staff of the Canadian Medical Protective Association in Ottawa. Read more about Dr. Gaulin.

Richard R. Gillies, MD/CM, FRCPC, died on June 1, 2023, in Ottawa, Ont., at age 92. He was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 1960. Dr. Gillies obtained his medical degree from Queen’s University in 1955. He was a pioneering doctor of Gastroenterology who was known for his compassion with patients. Read more about Dr. Gillies.

Nazir Ahmed Khan, MD, FRCPC, died on May 31, 2023, in Pointe-Claire, Que., at age 89. He was certified by the Royal College in Diagnostic Radiology in 1968. Dr. Khan obtained his medical degree from the University of Manitoba in 1962. He spent his career working at Montreal General Hospital while also teaching at McGill University. Read more about Dr. Khan.
