CanMEDS Physician Competency Framework
Describes the principal knowledge, skills and abilities of physicians oriented to optimal health and health care outcomes. The framework identifies the seven multi-faceted roles physicians will be called upon to play in their professional duties: Medical Expert, Communicator, Collaborator, Leader, Health Advocate, Scholar and Professional.
The updated CanMEDS 2015 Physician Competency Framework is the foundation project of the Royal College’s Competence by Design initiative. This edition of the framework further aligns with a competency-based approach to medical education. To achieve this, new competency milestones that can be applied in both residency and practice are being created for each existing CanMEDS Role.
