Harry Abramson, MD, FRCPC, died on January 10, 2023, in North York, Ont., at age 92. Dr. Abramson was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 1959. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1954. Dr. Abramson was devoted to his practice and is remembered as a kind and compassionate man who led by example. Allan Rae Downs, CM, MD, FRCSC, died on January 12, 2023, in Winnipeg, Man., at age 92. Dr. Downs was certified by the Royal College in General Surgery (1960) and Vascular Surgery (1983). He held many roles throughout his distinguished career, including head of Vascular Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg General Hospital where he took part in the first kidney transplant. Dr. Downs, appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 2002, was also a dedicated Royal College volunteer, serving on both the General Surgery and Vascular Surgery examination boards. Krystyna Halina Wojakowski, MD, FRCPC, died on January 2, 2023, in London, Ont., at age 87. Dr. Wojakowski was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry in 1979. Specializing in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, she was a dedicated clinician, working with children and families at various health care centres in London, including the Children’s Psychiatric Research Institute, the Victoria Hospital Child and Adolescent Outpatient Clinic and Children’s Aid Society London. Russel Leroy Fleming, MD, FRCPC, died on January 16, 2023, in Tiny, Ont., at age 79. Dr. Fleming was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry in 1975. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Western Ontario in 1969. A leader in promoting respectful and dignified mental health care, Dr. Fleming lived to enhance the lives of others. Terrance Blake McAllister, MD, FRCSC, died on January 21, 2023, in Bowmanville, Ont., at age 59. Dr. McAllister was certified by the Royal College in Orthopedic Surgery in 1992. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Western Ontario in 1987. Dr. McAllister is remembered for his care and interest in his patients, his incredible work ethic and his sense of humour. Read more about Dr. McAllister.
Sundaram Vivek Anand, MD, FRCSC, died on October 3, 2022, in Georgetown, Ont., at age 91. Dr. Anand was certified by the Royal College in General Surgery in 1966. He practised General Surgery for almost 50 years in London, Kentville, Napanee and Georgetown, and completed several locums in Canada’s North, including in Iqaluit and Moose Factory. Dr. Anand pioneered gastric bypass surgery in Canada, performing over 100 procedures and publishing his first experience in the Canadian Journal of Surgery in 1984. Read more about Dr. Anand.
Henry Frank Mizgala, MD/CM, FRCPC, died on December 11, 2022, in Vancouver, B.C., at age 90. Dr. Mizgala was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 1962. He obtained his medical degree from McGill University in 1957. Dr. Mizgala trained at Mount Sinai Hospital under two prestigious fellowships in Cardiology. Throughout his career, he practised as a cardiologist at various hospitals across Montreal and Vancouver and he was a professor at McGill University, the University of Montreal and the University of British Columbia. Ian Davidson Graham, MD, FRCPC, died on August 29, 2022, in Toronto, Ont., at age 88. Dr. Graham was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry in 1969. He was a training and supervising psychoanalyst with the Toronto Institute for Psychoanalysis. For over 50 years, Dr. Graham provided services in Psychiatry and psychoanalysis at his private practice in Toronto. In addition to his private practice, he travelled regularly to his hometown of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., to treat patients in that underserved area. Read more about Dr. Graham.
Ehor William Gauk, MD, FRCPC, died on November 4, 2022, in Edmonton, Alta., at age 87. Dr. Gauk was certified by the Royal College in Pediatrics in 1963. He enjoyed a long and successful career and for over five decades worked in Edmonton as a pediatrician with special training in Neurology. He also expanded his medical practice to include international medical education, working in China, Ukraine and Uganda. Read more about Dr. Gauk.
