Alvin Keith W. Brownell, MD, FRCPC, died on March 28, 2025, in Calgary, Alta., at age 83. Dr. Brownell was certified by the Royal College in Neurology in 1972. He obtained his medical degree from Queen’s University in 1964. Dr. Brownell was a neurologist at the University of Calgary, where he was well known for his clinical excellence and deep kindness and compassion. Passionate about education, Dr. Brownell was a respected and beloved professor in the department of Clinical Neurosciences and Internal Medicine at the University of Calgary. He was also a committed contributor to the Royal College, serving terms as chair of the CanMEDS Advisory Committee, chair of the Examination Committee, and a member of Council and several Royal College committees. Stuart James Connolly, MD, FRCPC, died on June 2, 2024, in Hamilton, Ont., at age 75. Dr. Connolly was certified by the Royal College in Cardiology in 1981. He obtained his medical degree from McGill University in 1977. Dr. Connolly had a distinguished career as a cardiologist and researcher, including 40 years at McMaster University, where he was director of the Cardiology division and founded the cardiac arrhythmia service. Dr. Connolly is recognized globally for his pioneering research in cardiac arrhythmia management. He was a dedicated educator who helped mentor many clinicians and scientists at McMaster and around the world. Read more about Dr. Connolly.

Pierre Daloze, CM, MD, FRCSC, died on Jan. 30, 2025, in Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Qué., at age 88. Dr. Daloze was certified by the Royal College in General Surgery in 1968. He obtained his medical degree from Université catholique de Louvain Faculté de Médecine et de Médecine Dentaire in Belgium in 1961. A renowned surgeon and pioneer in organ transplantation, Dr. Daloze performed the first liver transplant in Canada in 1970 and the first kidney-pancreas transplant in 1984. He was head of the Renal and Pancreatic Transplant Surgery Department at Hôpital Notre-Dame from 2007 to 2011. He was dedicated to improving care for transplant patients, including as co-founder of Maison des greffés, which provides essential support for transplant patients in Quebec. Dr. Daloze was appointed Knight of the National Order of Quebec in 2001 and a member of the Order of Canada in 2006. Latiff Abdul Kitchell, MD, FRCPC, died on Dec. 23, 2024, in Toronto, Ont., at age 85. Dr. Kitchell was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 1976. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1967. Dr. Kitchell worked at Michael Garron Hospital for over 35 years. He was not only respected for his skill as a physician but also for his warmth, empathy and kindness to everyone he encountered, both at the hospital and in his private practice. Donald James Paul, MD, FRCPC, died on Dec. 6, 2024, in Collingwood, Ont., at age 91. Dr. Paul was certified by the Royal College in Diagnostic Radiology in 1975. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1959. Dr. Paul had a celebrated career spanning 42 years, including as a general practitioner at his family practice in Collingwood and later as Chief of Radiology at Collingwood General & Marine Hospital (CGMH) from 1975 to 2002. Dr. Paul served on the Board of the CGMH Foundation and was dedicated to his community through numerous fundraising and volunteer efforts. Read more about Dr. Paul.

Thomas Joseph Ryan, MBChB, FRCPC, died on Aug. 19, 2024, in Hamilton, Ont., at age 87. Dr. Ryan was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 1970. He obtained his medical degree from University College Dublin School of Medicine in 1963. Dr. Ryan became chief resident in Internal Medicine at McMaster University in 1969. He worked at Hamilton General Hospital for over 30 years, including as an internist, endocrinologist and teacher. He also served as a member of the Royal College’s Internal Medicine Examination Board. Dr. Ryan will be remembered by his students, patients and colleagues for his empathy, erudition and humour. Robert Frederick Southern, MD, FRCPC, died on Dec. 21, 2024, in London, Ont., at age 86. Dr. Southern was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 1972. He obtained his medical degree from Western University in 1962. Dr. Southern began his career in general practice in Shelburne, Ont., before specializing in Internal Medicine in London, Ont. He especially valued his time teaching and mentoring generations of new physicians at St. Joseph’s Hospital in London, where he was always available to provide guidance.
