The Top Paper Awards are a cornerstone of the Royal College’s yearly International Conference on Residency Education (ICRE). As part of ICRE 2023, we are thrilled to reveal the top paper nominees in the following categories:

Royal College/JGME Top Research in Residency Education

The papers in this category describe medical education research. The Royal College/JGME Top Research in Residency Education nominees will present their papers on Saturday, October 21 from 9:15 to 10:30.

• “’Disadvantaged from the start’: An intersectional exploration of experiences of inclusion and exclusion in residency training programs,” presented by Dr. Justin Lam, The Hospital for Sick Children
• “Humility in medicine: An integrative review,” presented by Dr. Caroline Matchett, Mayo Clinic
• “‘Your comment is not as helpful as it could be…do you still want to submit?’ Using Natural Language Processing to identify the quality of supervisor narrative comments in Competency-based medical education,” presented by Dr. Robert Woods, University of Saskatchewan

Royal College/JGME Top Resident Research

The papers in this category describe medical education research. The first author of a Top Resident Research paper must be a resident. The Royal College/JGME Top Resident Research nominees will present their papers on Friday, October 20 from 10:30 to 12:15.

• “Integration of planetary health in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education: A scoping review,” presented by Dr. Rajajee Selvam, University of Ottawa
• “Quality of Narrative Feedback for Entrustable Professional Activities assessed over the first 5 years of CBME implementation in the Surgical Foundations curriculum at Queen’s University,” presented by Dr. Rosephine Del Fernandes, Queen’s University
• “Harassment in surgery: Still a long way to go,” presented by Dr. Komal Jariwala, Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry
• “Examining resident experiences of vulnerability in postgraduate medical education,” presented by Dr. Heather Nichol, Queen’s University

Top What Works 

The papers in ICRE’s What Works category describe innovative educational techniques and tools for residency education. These techniques and tools are being studied but have no results yet, and as such find themselves in this unique track. The Top What Works nominees will present their papers on Friday, October 20 from 15:15 to 17:00.

• “Addressing microaggressions with simulation: A novel educational intervention,” presented by Dr. Emma Duchesne, Queen’s University
• “The UnWRaP Study: Understanding the Well-being of Residents and Partners,” presented by Dr. Marina Boutros Salama, McMaster University
• “A novel case-based ethics morning report for teaching residents clinical ethics,” presented Dr. Holland Kaplan, Baylor College of Medicine
• “Informing, integrating, and evaluating a Professional Identity Formation curriculum for competency-based postgraduate programs,” presented by Dr. Natasha Khursigara Slattery, University of Limerick
• “A framework to disseminate a clinical leadership curriculum across specialties and institutions,” presented by Dr. Hemasree Yeluru, Eastern Virginia Medical School
